EX-MAX cat trees for Maine Coons
A Maine Coon needs a construction suited to its substantial body weight, long frame and characteristic way of moving. When the cat jumps onto a platform, climbs a post or pushes off suddenly from one of the components, the cat tree is subjected to much greater forces than when the animal is simply resting.
The EX-MAX range was designed for Maine Coons and other large cats. Its characteristic features include 18 cm diameter posts, spacious resting areas and layouts that allow cats to scratch, climb, observe their surroundings and rest comfortably.
Individual models differ in height, base dimensions, number of levels and available equipment. The range includes simpler constructions with a single resting place as well as extensive models with hammocks, houses, rosette beds, trough-shaped beds and large platforms.
Large cats need genuinely spacious resting areas
For a Maine Coon, the height of the cat tree is not the only important consideration. The actual usable dimensions of the platforms, hammocks and beds are equally significant. The external dimensions of a component do not always correspond to the amount of space on which the cat can lie comfortably.
A resting area should allow the cat to stretch out freely, turn around and adopt a natural sleeping position. A platform that is too small or a cramped house may look attractive in a photograph but may not be fully functional for an adult cat of a large breed.
The shape of the resting area also matters. Some cats prefer open platforms and rosette beds from which they can observe the room. Others choose soft hammocks, sheltered houses or elongated beds that support the natural position of the body.
Stability depends on the complete structural system
Large-diameter posts increase rigidity and provide an extensive scratching surface, but the post diameter alone does not determine the stability of the complete model. The dimensions and rigidity of the base, the arrangement of the support points, the position of the platforms and the quality of the connections are equally important.
A properly designed cat tree should withstand both the weight of a resting cat and the dynamic forces created during jumping, climbing and sudden changes of direction. Each model should therefore be assessed as a complete construction rather than solely by its height, total weight or the thickness of one component.
Detailed information about post construction, sisal quality, bases, platforms and mounting components can be found in our guide: How to recognise a truly good cat tree.
EX-MAX posts with a diameter of 18 cm
The free-standing EX-MAX models use posts with a diameter of 18 cm. They support the individual levels of the construction while also providing a large surface on which the cat can scratch and stretch its body.
When comparing models, it is worth considering not only the post diameter but also the length of the available sisal-covered surface. An adult Maine Coon should be able to extend its front legs and stretch its back without having to adopt an unnaturally crouched position.
In models equipped with several posts, the cat can choose between different scratching areas. Individual posts may also serve as steps providing access to higher platforms and resting places.
Comfortable access to successive levels
A large cat needs not only larger components but also a properly planned climbing route. A young and agile Maine Coon may have no difficulty making long jumps, while an older, heavier or less active animal will need platforms arranged in a more gradual and accessible way.
Before purchasing, check the distances between the levels, the direction of entry into a house or tunnel and the amount of space needed to jump onto the highest bed. The construction should allow the cat to use all of its components comfortably rather than only the lower section.
A cat tree for one or several Maine Coons
When several cats are expected to use the construction, the number of independent resting places becomes particularly important. Two or three hammocks, separate platforms or several beds allow the animals to rest at the same time and reduce competition for the highest position.
A multi-cat household also requires sufficient space for moving between the different levels. Cats should not block the only available climbing route or be forced to pass directly through an occupied resting place.
For several large and active cats, it is worth considering a model with a larger base, several support points and separate areas for scratching, climbing and resting.
A free-standing or floor-to-ceiling cat tree?
Free-standing models can be positioned without permanent attachment to the ceiling. Their suitability depends mainly on the available floor space, the dimensions of the base and the arrangement of the room. They are practical where the construction may need to be moved or where tension mounting is not possible.
Structures installed between the floor and ceiling make it possible to use the full height of the room and create extensive vertical climbing routes. A tension-mounted system does not, however, replace correct structural design, strong connections and accurate adjustment to the height of the room.
Models intended for this type of installation are available in the separate floor-to-ceiling cat trees for Maine Coons category.
Materials, cleaning and refurbishment
EX-MAX constructions use rigid plywood components, natural sisal surfaces and upholstery materials selected for the particular type of resting area. Suitable rigidity of the platforms and bases helps reduce bending when the construction is used by heavy cats.
On many models, the covers of the resting areas can be removed for cleaning or replaced after they become worn. The possibility of replacing posts, covers and other selected components makes it possible to refurbish the construction without purchasing a completely new product.
This is particularly important for cat trees used intensively by several large cats, as beds and sisal surfaces may wear more quickly than the structural components.
How to choose the right EX-MAX model
Before choosing a model, compare the dimensions of the base, the overall height, the size of the resting surfaces, the number of levels and the way the cat will access individual components. Consider the cat’s actual size and weight as well as its age, mobility and temperament.
A lower model with a large and easily accessible bed may be sufficient for a calm cat. An active Maine Coon will make better use of a tall construction with long posts and several levels. A home with several cats will require a greater number of separate resting places.
When a standard layout does not suit the dimensions of the room or the animal’s needs, selected components can also be adapted. Further information is available on our custom-made cat trees and individual modifications page.
