Kaktus EX-KAK cat trees – a distinctive Rufi range

EX-KAK is a separate Rufi cat tree range also known as the Kaktus series. Its most distinctive features are substantial cylindrical posts with a diameter of 27 cm, covered with thick sisal matting. These posts give the models their recognisable form and clearly distinguish them from the other ranges available in our collection.

The category includes simple constructions with a single post and one resting area as well as extensive multi-level models with several beds. Individual versions differ in height, base dimensions, number of support points and type of equipment.

A common feature of the entire series is the use of large sisal-covered surfaces and the combination of scratching, climbing and resting functions within one construction.

Posts with a diameter of 27 cm covered in sisal matting

EX-KAK models use posts with a diameter of 27 cm. Instead of conventional sisal rope, their external surface is covered with thick sisal matting, creating a wide and compact scratching area.

The substantial diameter allows the cat to place its front paws against a large surface and scratch different areas of the post. In taller models, the individual post sections function both as structural components and as part of a vertical route leading to successive platforms and resting areas.

When comparing models, it is worth considering not only the post diameter but also the length of the available sisal-covered surface. The cat should be able to extend its front legs and stretch its back freely while scratching.

A construction range rather than a category for one particular breed

Kaktus cat trees are not intended exclusively for Maine Coons or any other particular breed. The right model should be selected according to the cat’s actual size, weight, age and activity level, as well as the number of animals expected to use the construction.

A lower model with one comfortable bed may be suitable for a medium-sized cat or a calm, less active animal. More extensive constructions equipped with several levels and spacious resting areas can be used by large cats or by several animals at the same time.

The layout of the particular model is therefore more important than choosing a cat tree solely on the basis of the cat’s breed.

Stability depends on the complete construction

A substantial post can increase the rigidity of a cat tree, but its diameter is not the only factor that determines stability. The dimensions and rigidity of the base, the arrangement of the support points, the position of the resting areas and the way the individual components are connected are equally important.

A cat tree must withstand not only the weight of a resting animal but also the forces created when the cat jumps, climbs and pushes forcefully against a post. Each model should therefore be assessed as a complete structural system rather than solely on the basis of one selected parameter.

More information about post construction, bases, platforms, sisal and mounting components can be found in our guide: How to recognise a truly good cat tree.

Different arrangements of platforms and resting areas

EX-KAK models may be equipped with open platforms, rosette beds, hammocks, houses and elongated resting areas. Each type of component accommodates a different way of resting and observing the surroundings.

Some cats willingly choose elevated open beds from which they can observe the room. Others prefer sheltered houses, soft hammocks or lower resting areas that can be reached without making long jumps.

Before purchasing, check the actual usable dimensions of the resting areas and the distances between successive levels. The construction should allow the cat to use all of its components comfortably rather than only the lower section of the cat tree.

A Kaktus cat tree for one or several cats

In a multi-cat household, the number of separate resting areas is particularly important. Several independent platforms, rosette beds or hammocks allow more than one animal to use the construction at the same time and reduce competition for the highest level.

The way cats move between the resting areas also matters. The animals should not block one another’s only climbing route or be forced to pass directly through a bed occupied by another cat.

For several active cats, a model with a larger base, several support points and separate areas for scratching, climbing and resting will generally be a more suitable choice.

Finishes selected to suit your interior

The characteristic posts make EX-KAK models a distinctive feature of the room. Depending on the options available for the selected product, the wood finish and the type and colour of the fabric used on the resting areas can be chosen to suit the interior.

The finish should be selected not only to match the colour of the furniture but also according to the way the cat tree will be used. In a home with several cats, easy-to-clean fabrics and removable textile components may be particularly practical.

The exact range of available colours, fabrics and finishes is shown in the options for each individual model.

Replacement covers and the possibility of refurbishing the cat tree

In many EX-KAK constructions, textile components can be removed for cleaning. When they become worn, new covers suited to the particular model can be ordered. This makes it possible to refresh the appearance of the cat tree without replacing the entire construction.

Replaceable covers are particularly useful for cat trees used intensively by several animals. The structural components may remain fully functional while the most heavily used resting surfaces are cleaned or replaced.

Covers designed for individual models are available in the separate replacement covers for EX-KAK cat trees category.

How to choose the right EX-KAK model

Before choosing a model, compare the dimensions of the base, the overall height, the number of posts, the length of the sisal-covered surfaces, the size of the resting areas and the distances between the individual levels.

For an older or less mobile cat, easy and gradual access to the resting areas will be particularly important. An active animal may make better use of a tall construction with several levels and longer sections intended for climbing and scratching.

When several cats will use the construction, also check the number of independent resting areas and the amount of space available for moving between them. Measure the intended position of the cat tree and allow enough space for the animals to jump onto its side and upper components.

Modifications to Kaktus models

When a selected model needs to be adapted to the room or to the requirements of a particular cat, selected components may be modified. Depending on the project, this may include changing the type of resting area, the post length, the arrangement of the platforms or other parts of the construction.

Further information about individual projects is available on our custom-made cat trees and individual modifications page.

EX-KAK or another range for a large cat?

The EX-KAK range is a suitable choice when you are looking for a distinctive construction with substantial 27 cm posts and large surfaces covered in sisal matting. Other Rufi ranges offer different post diameters, platform arrangements and types of resting areas.

A comparison of the EX-KAK and EX-MAX ranges is available in the parent cat trees for large cats category.
