Outdoor cat trees for aviaries, balconies and terraces are waterproof structures designed for use outside the home. The collection includes models made from waterproof plywood protected with yacht varnish and cat trees constructed from black formwork plywood and finished with artificial grass. Both ranges use pressure-treated solid-wood posts, weather-resistant synthetic scratching rope and Rufi’s proprietary fastening system.
Selected varnished models include removable covers made from Teflon-treated fabric with reduced water absorption. This fabric is not completely waterproof. During heavy or prolonged rain it may become soaked, so wet covers should be removed from the cat tree and dried completely before being fitted again.
Outdoor cat trees – for aviaries, balconies and terraces
Outdoor cat trees are designed for places where an ordinary indoor model would be exposed to moisture, rain, sunlight, frost and frequent temperature changes. They can be installed in a properly secured cat aviary, on a balcony or terrace, in a catio or in another enclosed outdoor area intended for cats.
These structures give cats scratching surfaces, climbing routes, observation points and resting areas at different heights. At the same time, their structural components and finishes are selected specifically for outdoor conditions.
The Rufi range includes two principal technologies:
- outdoor cat trees made from varnished wood – waterproof plywood protected with yacht varnish and, depending on the model, fitted with removable soft covers;
- outdoor cat trees finished with artificial grass – made from black waterproof formwork plywood and covered with a durable outdoor surface.
Both collections are waterproof. Their main differences are the technology used to finish the shelves and beds, their appearance and their day-to-day maintenance.
Why is an ordinary indoor cat tree unsuitable for outdoor use?
Many indoor cat trees use cardboard tubes, furniture board, natural sisal rope and upholstery designed only for dry rooms. These materials may absorb moisture, swell, delaminate or gradually lose their properties when exposed to rain and temperature fluctuations.
An outdoor cat tree for a balcony, terrace or cat aviary must withstand more than the static weight of a resting animal. It is also subjected to dynamic jumping, climbing and scratching as well as repeated heating, cooling, wetting and drying.
For this reason, Rufi outdoor constructions use:
- waterproof structural boards;
- pressure-treated solid-wood posts;
- synthetic rope intended for outdoor conditions;
- a proprietary system for fastening and embedding threaded components;
- shelf finishes resistant to moisture and changing weather.
Two outdoor cat tree technologies
You can choose between two types of construction. Both are intended for outdoor use, but they differ in appearance, bed design and maintenance.
Outdoor cat trees made from varnished wood
In this range, bases and shelves are made from waterproof plywood and thoroughly protected with yacht varnish. The coating protects the surfaces and edges, facilitates cleaning and gives the cat tree a refined furniture-like appearance.
Varnished models can include soft resting areas with replaceable covers. They are suitable for people who want to combine a durable outdoor structure with comfort similar to that provided by an indoor cat tree.

Waterproof outdoor cat trees with artificial grass
The second range uses black formwork plywood. This waterproof structural board is laminated on both sides and intended for applications in which the material must withstand moisture and intensive use.
The formwork-plywood components are finished with artificial grass. This creates the distinctive appearance of the range, provides a comfortable surface beneath the paws and allows dirt to be rinsed away easily.

Teflon-treated fabric is less absorbent, but it is not waterproof
Selected varnished models use removable covers made from Teflon-treated fabric with reduced water absorption. The surface takes in small amounts of water more slowly than conventional upholstery and makes some dirt easier to remove.
Reduced absorbency does not mean complete waterproofing. During heavy, prolonged rainfall or when water remains on the fabric, the cover may become soaked. A waterlogged cover should not remain on the bed for an extended period.
After heavy rain:
- remove the wet cover from the cat tree;
- allow excess water to drain;
- clean it in accordance with the care instructions when necessary;
- dry it completely in a dry, well-ventilated place, preferably during warm, sunny weather;
- refit it only when the fabric and filling are fully dry.
When prolonged heavy rain is forecast, it is advisable to move removable textile components indoors in advance. The wooden cat-tree structure itself remains designed for outdoor use.
Pressure-treated solid-wood posts
Outdoor cat trees do not use the cardboard tubes commonly found in indoor constructions. The posts are manufactured from solid wood that has undergone pressure treatment.
During this process, protective treatment penetrates the wood structure, preparing the post for an environment exposed to moisture and fluctuating temperatures. This improves the durability of the structural component during outdoor use.
The solid-wood posts serve as:
- load-bearing components of the cat tree;
- vertical scratching surfaces;
- climbing routes between levels;
- stable connections between the base, shelves and beds.
Synthetic rope that imitates natural sisal
The posts are wrapped with synthetic rope whose texture resembles natural sisal. It provides a clear, coarse scratching surface but is selected specifically for outdoor use.
Unlike natural sisal used in dry interiors, the synthetic rope is resistant to:
- moisture and rainfall;
- sunlight;
- frost;
- frequent temperature fluctuations;
- repeated wetting and drying.
The rope does not have to be removed during winter or protected before every rainfall. Like every surface subjected to intensive scratching, it will nevertheless wear mechanically over time and should be inspected periodically.
Rufi’s proprietary fastening system
Rufi outdoor constructions use a connection system developed by our company. Threaded components are embedded in the wooden posts so that the bases, shelves and beds can be tightened firmly.
The system is intended to support:
- dynamic loads generated by jumping and climbing;
- firm tightening of individual levels;
- repeated assembly and disassembly;
- durable connections in changing outdoor conditions;
- later replacement of individual components.
This is not the standard connection used in cardboard posts. The solid-wood core and the specially developed threaded fastening system are intended for heavier multi-level constructions.
An outdoor cat tree for an aviary or catio
A cat tree for an aviary or catio organises the space vertically. It allows cats to use the height of the enclosure rather than only its floor area. They can climb, rest on shelves and watch their surroundings from an elevated position.
For a large enclosure, consider a design with:
- several levels at different heights;
- long posts for scratching and full-body stretching;
- more than one comfortable resting place;
- a layout permitting convenient climbing and descending;
- beds suited to the size of the cats;
- stability during simultaneous use by several animals.
In a multi-cat household or breeding facility, the number of full-sized shelves and the availability of alternative movement routes are as important as the total height.
An outdoor cat tree for a balcony
An outdoor cat tree for a balcony creates a place for rest and observation without taking up additional indoor space. Measure the balcony carefully, including the full width of the structure, the direction in which shelves project and the room required for jumping.
The balcony must first be secured with suitable netting, an enclosure or another system that prevents falls and escape. A cat tree does not replace balcony protection and should not be positioned in a way that helps the cat climb above the safety net.
For tall models, also consider:
- the distance between upper shelves and the balcony edge or netting;
- whether the balcony door can open fully;
- water drainage from the floor;
- access for cleaning;
- exposure to strong wind.
An outdoor cat tree for a terrace or secured garden area
A cat tree for a terrace can be larger and more complex than a model selected for a compact balcony. The available space may allow several climbing routes and a greater number of resting places.
A cat tree placed in a garden should be used only inside a properly secured enclosure, aviary or catio. Placing the structure in an open garden does not protect the cat from escape, other animals or hazards beyond the property.
Stability and correct positioning
Place the structure on a level, stable and load-bearing surface. Stability during normal use by a cat is not the same as resistance to every possible wind force.
In a particularly exposed location:
- choose a position sheltered from the strongest gusts;
- do not place the cat tree on loose or sloping surfaces;
- check regularly that it remains level;
- inspect and tighten all connections periodically;
- select additional securing measures appropriate to the model and local conditions when necessary.
Do not automatically screw the product to a railing, façade or floor without confirming that the chosen method is appropriate and will not damage the structure.
How to choose the size of an outdoor cat tree
Consider:
- the cat’s size and weight;
- the number of animals using the structure;
- their age, activity and mobility;
- the actual dimensions of shelves and beds;
- the length of the scratching posts;
- the distances between levels;
- the complete width and depth of the cat tree;
- the size of the secured outdoor area.
The tallest model is not always the best choice. An older or less mobile cat may benefit more from a clear route and smaller distances between shelves. Young, active animals may use additional levels and longer climbing posts more effectively.
Cleaning outdoor cat trees
Outdoor constructions can be vacuumed, rinsed with water and cleaned according to the recommendations for the selected range. Artificial-grass models can also be cleaned with a pressure washer.
When pressure washing, maintain a sensible distance from the surface to avoid mechanical damage to edges, rope, artificial grass or fastening points. After cleaning, leave the cat tree in a well-ventilated place until it is completely dry.
Remove all textile components before thoroughly washing a varnished structure. Clean and dry the covers separately in accordance with the properties of the fabric.
Varnished wood or artificial grass?
The choice depends primarily on the intended use and preferred appearance.
- Varnished wood is suitable for people looking for a more refined, furniture-like design with the option of soft removable beds.
- Artificial grass is suitable when technical outdoor finishing, easy rinsing and the absence of conventional textile upholstery on the shelves are priorities.

- the way the area is secured against escape;

- exposure to rain, sun and wind;
