Outdoor cat trees made from varnished wood are waterproof structures designed for secured catios, balconies, terraces and outdoor enclosures. Bases and platforms are made from waterproof plywood protected with yacht varnish, while pressure-treated solid-wood posts are wrapped with synthetic rope resistant to moisture, sunlight, frost and temperature changes.
Selected models include soft beds with removable covers made from Teflon-treated fabric with reduced water absorption. The fabric is not completely waterproof. After heavy rain, wet covers should be removed and dried completely before being fitted again.

Outdoor cat trees – varnished wood
Outdoor cat trees made from varnished wood are designed for secured balconies, terraces, catios and cat aviaries. They combine a waterproof construction with the refined, furniture-like appearance of Rufi wooden cat trees.
The range includes compact models with one long scratching post and an upper bed as well as tall, multi-level structures equipped with platforms, hammocks, hideaways and observation points. This makes it possible to select a compact cat tree for a balcony or an extensive cat tree for a catio used by several animals.
The structural parts are intended for outdoor use. Separate care is required for removable textile covers, which absorb water more slowly but are not fully waterproof.
Waterproof plywood protected with yacht varnish
Bases and platforms are made from multilayer waterproof plywood rather than chipboard or MDF. The plywood is additionally protected with yacht varnish, which covers the surfaces and prepared edges.
This construction provides:
- waterproof platforms and bases;
- protection against moisture and rainfall;
- resistance to changing outdoor temperatures;
- surfaces that are easier to clean;
- an elegant wooden finish for balconies and terraces;
- a choice of available wood finishes depending on the model.
Inspect the varnished surfaces periodically. Deep mechanical damage to the coating should be protected so that the underlying material remains properly sealed.
Comfortable outdoor beds
Depending on the model, the cat tree may include removable cushions, single or double hammocks, soft upper beds or an enclosed hideaway. Removable covers can be cleaned, dried and replaced without replacing the complete structure.
Teflon-treated fabric is not fully waterproof
The removable covers use Teflon-treated fabric with reduced water absorption. Small quantities of water penetrate more slowly than they would through ordinary upholstery, and some fresh dirt is easier to wipe away.
Reduced absorption does not mean complete waterproofing. During prolonged or heavy rainfall, the fabric and filling may become soaked.
After heavy rain:
- remove the wet cover from the bed or hammock;
- allow excess water to drain;
- clean it in accordance with the care instructions when necessary;
- dry the cover and filling completely in a dry, ventilated place;
- prefer warm, sunny weather for thorough drying;
- refit the cover only when every layer is fully dry.
When long periods of heavy rain are forecast, removable textiles should be moved indoors in advance. The varnished wooden structure itself remains designed for outdoor use.
Pressure-treated solid-wood posts
Instead of cardboard tubes, Rufi outdoor cat trees use pressure-treated solid-wood posts. The protective treatment penetrates the wood structure and prepares the posts for moisture and fluctuating temperatures.
The posts provide:
- structural support between the levels;
- long vertical scratching surfaces;
- climbing routes for active cats;
- a solid core for the fastening system;
- stable connections between the base, platforms and beds.
Weather-resistant synthetic scratching rope
The posts are wrapped with synthetic rope whose texture resembles natural sisal. It provides a coarse scratching surface while being suitable for outdoor use.
The rope is resistant to:
- rain and moisture;
- sunlight;
- frost;
- temperature changes;
- repeated wetting and drying.
It does not need to be removed for winter or protected before every shower. Mechanical wear from scratching is natural, so its condition should still be checked periodically.
Rufi’s proprietary fastening system
Threaded fittings are embedded in the solid-wood posts using a system developed by Rufi. It is designed for firm assembly of heavier, multi-level cat trees and for dynamic loads generated by jumping and climbing.
The system supports:
- strong connections between bases, posts and platforms;
- accurate tightening of individual levels;
- repeated assembly and disassembly;
- periodic checking and retightening;
- later replacement of worn individual components.
Outdoor cat tree for a balcony
A varnished outdoor cat tree for a balcony gives a cat a place to scratch, rest and observe the surroundings. For compact balconies, a simple model with a long post and one or two beds may be most practical.
Before ordering, measure:
- the complete width and depth;
- the projection of platforms and hammocks beyond the base;
- the distance between the highest bed and the safety net;
- the space required for jumping and descending;
- whether the balcony door can open fully;
- the access required for cleaning.
The balcony must be secured with suitable netting or an enclosure. A cat tree does not replace balcony protection and must not help the animal climb above it.
Cat tree for a terrace, catio or aviary
A larger terrace or enclosure can accommodate a tall structure with several movement routes and resting areas. In an aviary or catio, the cat tree helps use the vertical space rather than only the floor.
For several cats, assess the number of full-sized beds, the distances between levels, the length of the scratching posts and whether animals can move without blocking one another.
Stability and positioning
Place the cat tree on a level, rigid and load-bearing surface. Stability during feline use is not the same as resistance to every wind force.
In an exposed location:
- choose the most sheltered position available;
- do not place the tree on loose or sloping surfaces;
- check that it remains level;
- inspect and retighten the connections periodically;
- use additional securing appropriate to the model and location when necessary.
Cleaning a varnished outdoor cat tree
Varnished surfaces can be vacuumed, wiped and washed with water. Remove all covers, cushions and textile components before thoroughly cleaning the construction.
If a pressure washer is used, maintain a sensible distance and moderate pressure. Do not direct a concentrated jet at close range towards plywood edges, joints, rope, cover fasteners or damaged varnish.
Leave the structure to dry completely after washing. Covers and fillings should be cleaned and dried separately.
Varnished wood or artificial grass?
- Varnished wood provides a refined furniture-like appearance and can include soft beds with removable covers.
- Artificial grass provides a more technical finish based on black formwork plywood and easily rinsed surfaces.
For models without conventional textile-covered platforms, explore waterproof outdoor cat trees with artificial grass.
How to choose a varnished outdoor cat tree
Before ordering, compare:
- the location: balcony, terrace, catio or aviary;
- the complete product dimensions;
- the cats’ size, weight and activity;
- the number and dimensions of beds;
- the lengths of the scratching posts;
- the distances between levels;
- the number of removable textile components;
- exposure to heavy rain and wind;
- the space required for cleaning and drying.
All outdoor ranges can be compared in outdoor cat trees for aviaries, balconies and terraces.
