A large cat does not load the structure only with its stationary body weight. When a Maine Coon weighing as much as 12–14 kg jumps at speed onto a side bed, climbs a post or stops suddenly on an elevated level, substantially greater dynamic forces act on the cat tree.

The ceiling support restricts movement of the tall structure and helps transfer forces generated when the cat lands on elements extending beyond the main post axis. M12 floor-to-ceiling tensioning system

The upper section of EX-S-MAX-3 is stabilised by a tensioning mechanism based on an M12 screw. When correctly adjusted, the screw creates pressure between the base resting on the floor and the upper plate positioned against the ceiling.

The mechanism does more than regulate the final height. It also creates a second support point for the tall structure and helps reduce movement during climbing, scratching and energetic use of the beds.

The safety of the complete cat tree does not depend on the M12 screw alone. The rigidity of the posts, tightness of threaded connections, correct positioning of every element and even contact of the base and ceiling plate are equally important.

Manufactured to the actual room height

Every EX-S-MAX-3 is manufactured according to the room height supplied when the order is placed. Before purchase, the distance from the finished floor surface to the ceiling must be measured precisely at the intended installation point.

The measurement should not be based solely on architectural plans. Floors and ceilings may have local irregularities or slight slopes. It is advisable to take several measurements close to the planned position and provide the actual height of the finished room.

The correct dimension directly affects the adjustment range of the M12 tensioner. A substantial difference between the stated and actual height may make assembly difficult or prevent the correct pressure from being achieved.

A suitably strong ceiling and stable floor

The upper plate should press against a flat, stable and suitably strong part of the ceiling. The tensioning mechanism produces pressure, so the surface above the cat tree must be capable of carrying it safely.

With a suspended ceiling, lightweight boards, decorative panels, ceiling tiles or another surface that is not itself a rigid structural element, suitability should be checked before installation. A thin board or decorative covering should not automatically be treated as an appropriate support point.

The floor is equally important. The base should make even contact with a flat and stable surface. A thick carpet, soft floor covering or material that compresses under pressure may affect vertical alignment and subsequent tension.

60 × 60 cm base and efficient use of space

EX-S-MAX-3 stands on a 60 × 60 cm base. Compared with a large freestanding cat tree, it uses relatively little floor space because the construction develops primarily in the vertical direction.

The base forms the lower support point of the complete system. Together with the ceiling plate, it carries the weight of the structure and the forces generated while the cat uses the different levels.

The hammock, round beds and tunnel may extend beyond the outline of the base. The actual area required is therefore greater than 60 × 60 cm. Adequate room should be left for jumping, turning a long body, hanging paws and tail, and safe access to and from the structure.

Substantial 18 cm diameter posts

One of the principal features of EX-S-MAX-3 is its 18 cm diameter scratching posts. They are considerably thicker than those used on many standard floor-to-ceiling cat trees.

The increased diameter provides a broad sisal-rope surface. A Maine Coon can position its front paws high, grip firmly with its claws and use the posts not only for claw care but also for climbing and pulling its complete body upwards.

The thick posts also form the substantial load-bearing axis of the tall construction. This is particularly important when a large cat jumps onto a side bed and loads the cat tree laterally as well as vertically.

The overall length of the post axis is adapted to the room height. Individual sections provide scratching and climbing surfaces at different levels.

Large 62 × 72 cm single hammock

EX-S-MAX-3 includes one single hammock with a 62 × 72 cm frame. Its actual usable resting area measures approximately 55 × 62 cm.

For a large cat, the internal surface on which the body actually rests is particularly important. A 55 × 62 cm area gives an adult Maine Coon room to position its torso, curl up, lie on its side or support its head and front paws against the edge.

The hammock fabric adapts beneath the cat’s weight and supports the body differently from a rigid platform. It creates a soft place for prolonged sleep, partly surrounding the animal while remaining open to the room.

The hammock is particularly suitable for cats that prefer a soft surface and a slight recess beneath their body while resting.

Two 60 cm round dish-style beds

The model includes two round dish-style beds with a diameter of 60 cm. They provide large, stable surfaces for rest and for observing the surroundings from an elevated position.

A 60 cm diameter gives an adult Maine Coon considerably more room than the small upper platforms found on many conventional cat trees. The cat can rest curled up, lie in a semi-reclined position or allow part of its paws and tail to extend beyond the central surface.

Two separate round beds allow the cat to change height and side. In a multi-cat household they may also provide independent positions for two animals, provided their relationship permits simultaneous use.

Because the tunnel has a diameter of 30 cm, it should primarily be regarded as a passage, play element and sheltered intermediate zone. For an exceptionally substantial Maine Coon, ease of entry will depend on the individual cat’s build. The full-sized principal resting places remain the hammock and the two 60 cm round beds.

Open and more sheltered zones

The combination of a hammock, two round beds and a tunnel gives the cat spaces with different characteristics. The round beds form the most open observation points, the hammock adapts partly to the body and the tunnel provides greater enclosure.

The cat can choose according to room temperature, sunlight, household activity and its current need for privacy. It may select a round bed to observe the room, the hammock for prolonged sleep and the tunnel for play or a short sheltered pause.

Individual animals may occupy the two round beds and hammock at different levels. The number of places does not guarantee simultaneous use by every cat, however, because this depends on temperament, relationships and the way they share space.

Removable hammock cover and replaceable cushions

The single-hammock cover can be removed and washed at temperatures up to 40°C. This makes thorough hair removal and cleaning of the surface in direct contact with the cat easier.
