Large Kaktus EX-KAK cat trees

A large cat tree should offer considerably more than just impressive height. The overall solidity of the construction, the dimensions of the base, the available scratching surface, the size of the resting areas and the arrangement of the individual levels are equally important.

The Kaktus EX-KAK range includes large cat trees distinguished by characteristic posts with a diameter of 27 cm, covered with thick sisal matting. These constructions combine extensive scratching surfaces with areas intended for climbing, observing the surroundings and resting.

The category includes both lower models with one substantial post and a single resting area and tall, multi-level cat trees equipped with several beds. This makes it possible to choose a model suited to the available space, the cat’s activity level and the number of animals expected to use the construction.

What does a large cat tree really mean?

The term “large cat tree” is often associated exclusively with the overall height of the product. Height alone, however, is not a sufficient criterion. A cat tree can be very tall while still having a small base, narrow posts and compact platforms that do not provide the cat with sufficient comfort.

The actual size and functionality of a construction are determined by a combination of several parameters: the width and depth of the base, the number of supporting points, the diameter and length of the posts, the available scratching area, the dimensions of the beds and the space required for the cat to move between the different levels.

In the EX-KAK range, the term “large” refers primarily to the substantial dimensions of the components, the diameter of the posts and the extensive surface covered with sisal. Individual models differ in height, number of levels and the total amount of floor space they occupy.

Substantial Kaktus posts with a diameter of 27 cm

The most distinctive feature of Kaktus EX-KAK cat trees is their cylindrical posts with a diameter of 27 cm. They are considerably wider than the conventional posts used in typical cat trees and create an extensive vertical surface against which the cat can comfortably place its front paws.

The external surface of each post is covered with thick sisal matting. Instead of providing only a narrow scratching strip, the sisal covers almost the entire circumference of the post, allowing the cat to choose different positions and areas while maintaining its claws.

In taller constructions, the substantial posts also form part of a vertical climbing route. The cat can grip the sisal matting with its claws, pull itself upwards and move onto the successive platforms or resting areas.

A large surface for scratching and stretching

A good large cat tree should allow the animal to extend its front paws freely and stretch its entire back. For this reason, the length of the uninterrupted sisal-covered area is just as important as the diameter of the post.

A scratching section that is too short forces the cat to adopt an unnatural position or to use only the lower part of the construction. A longer sisal area enables the animal to scratch in different places, climb and perform a complete stretching movement.

This is important not only for a physically large cat, but also for a smaller and highly active animal. The size of the cat tree should therefore be selected according to both the cat’s body dimensions and the way it moves and uses the construction.

A large cat tree does not always have to be very tall

The Kaktus range includes both extensive XXL cat trees and lower constructions based on a single substantial post. A lower model can be the right choice for a cat that needs a large scratching surface and a comfortable bed but is not particularly interested in climbing to very high levels.

A tall, multi-level cat tree will be more suitable for an active animal that enjoys climbing and observing the room from above. More extensive constructions can also provide several independent resting areas for multiple cats.

The choice should therefore not be based solely on the designation “XXL”. Compare the actual dimensions of the base, the overall height, the number of posts, the size of the platforms and the arrangement of the routes between the different levels.

The stability of a large cat tree depends on the complete construction

Substantial posts increase the rigidity of individual sections of a cat tree, but their diameter alone does not guarantee stability. A large cat tree must be designed as one complete structural system in which the base, platforms, supporting points and arrangement of the upper components all work together.

When a cat jumps, climbs or pushes forcefully against an element, it generates loads considerably greater than its static body weight while resting. The higher a bed is positioned and the farther it is located from the centre of the base, the greater the forces acting on the complete construction.

When comparing models, it is therefore worth checking the dimensions and thickness of the base, the number of posts supporting the upper components, the arrangement of the platforms and the way the individual parts are connected.

Large beds, platforms, hammocks and houses

A large construction should provide the cat with sufficiently spacious resting areas. The external diameter of a platform or bed, however, does not always correspond to the actual usable surface available to the animal.

With rosette beds and resting areas surrounded by a raised rim, the internal space should be checked. For hammocks, the dimensions of the textile section are important, while houses should be assessed according to their internal width, entrance size and the space available for the cat to turn around.

EX-KAK models may be equipped with open platforms, plate-shaped beds, rosette beds, elongated trough beds, hammocks or houses. The equipment should correspond to the position in which the cat usually rests and whether it prefers open observation points or more sheltered spaces.

A large cat tree for one or several cats

A large cat tree can serve as a shared space for several cats, provided that it has a sufficient number of independent resting areas. Separate platforms, hammocks and beds allow several animals to use the construction at the same time.

The arrangement of the individual components is also important. Cats should not block one another’s only access route or be forced to pass directly through a resting area occupied by another animal.

For several active cats, consider a model with a larger base, several supporting points and separate zones intended for scratching, climbing, observing the surroundings and resting.

Comfortable routes between the different levels

Even a very large cat tree will not be fully functional if the cat cannot comfortably reach its platforms. When choosing a model, check the height differences between the levels, their relative positions and the space required for the animal to jump safely.

A young and agile cat may comfortably use long climbing sections and larger distances between platforms. An older, heavier or less active animal will need a more gradual route leading to the resting areas.

The direction of access to houses, hammocks and elongated beds should also be checked. A sufficiently large component may still be uncomfortable if its entrance is obstructed by a post or requires a difficult jump from an unsuitable direction.

Kaktus EX-KAK or EX-MAX?

Kaktus EX-KAK and EX-MAX are separate construction ranges. Kaktus models are distinguished primarily by substantial 27 cm posts covered with sisal matting and are presented as large cat trees available in different heights and levels of complexity.

How to choose the right Kaktus EX-KAK model

Before purchasing, compare the overall height and width of the cat tree, the dimensions of the base, the number of posts, the length of the surfaces covered with sisal matting, the size of the resting areas and the distances between the successive levels.

A lower model with one large and comfortable resting area may be suitable for a calm cat. An active animal will make better use of a multi-level construction with long climbing surfaces, several platforms and a high observation bed.

When selecting a cat tree for several cats, also consider the number of independent resting areas, the width of the routes between them and whether several animals can use the scratching surfaces simultaneously.

Before ordering, carefully measure the intended position of the cat tree. In addition to the dimensions of the base itself, allow enough space for the cat to jump onto the side platforms and use the highest components freely.

Removable covers and the possibility of refurbishing the cat tree

With intensive use, the textile components of the resting areas are usually the first parts to show signs of wear. On many Kaktus models, the covers can be removed for cleaning and replaced with new components suited to the particular model when they become worn.

This makes it possible to refresh the appearance of the cat tree without replacing the entire construction. It is particularly useful in a multi-cat household, where beds, hammocks and cushions are used much more intensively.

When a selected model does not precisely match the needs of the cat or the dimensions of the room, certain components of the construction may be adapted. Depending on the project, this can include changing the type of bed, the length of a post, the platform arrangement or the equipment of the cat tree.

A construction should not be selected solely on the basis of its height or the designation “XXL”. It is far more important to match its actual dimensions and layout to the size, age, activity level and habits of the particular cat.
